  • Mobile Rig: Slang commonly used by operators to describe the entire radio and antenna system installed in a vehicle.
  • Ham Radio: Often used generally to describe the amateur radio bands (VHF/UHF) that these mobile radios utilize for emergency communication.
  • GMRS Radio: General Mobile Radio Service, a popular, family-friendly frequency band that requires an FCC license but no exam. Many preppers install GMRS mobile units in their "bug-out vehicles".
  • Base Station: When the radio is removed from the vehicle and used with a power supply and a stationary antenna at a permanent shelter, it is referred to as a base station
